SCROLL

Professional Profile

Structural calculations, finite element verification, and coordinated 3D delivery across industrial, infrastructure, and building projects.

I am a civil and structural engineer based in Italy, with international experience across oil and gas facilities, highway bridges and viaducts, and commercial and residential buildings. My current work focuses on structural steelwork and reinforced concrete for industrial plants: sizing pipe racks, pressure-vessel supports, equipment skids, and foundations subject to operational, thermal, fatigue, and seismic actions.

I hold two Master's degrees: an MSc in Structural Engineering from the University of Bologna, where I graduated top of my class in Advanced Structural Mechanics, and an MSc in Building Information Modelling (BIM) from the University of Pisa. Combining analytical mechanics with federated BIM coordination lets me check member stability, connection stiffness, and soil–structure interaction — and resolve clashes with piping, mechanical, HVAC, and firefighting disciplines before fabrication drawings are issued.

Whether assessing existing prestressed concrete viaducts under NTC 2018 and Eurocode 8, or detailing heavy industrial steelwork to EN 1993, AISC, BS, and ACI 318/350, I use finite element software (SAP2000, Midas Gen/Civil, CSI Bridge, ETABS, SAFE) to verify physical load paths and produce clear calculation reports.

STRUCTURAL INTERACTION STUDY · 19-NODE CANTILEVERED GANTRY

Industrial pipe racks and bridge launching gantries rarely stop at simple supports. This 19-node, 40-member two-tier planar truss combines V-pier foundations at x = 2 m and 10 m, a lower pipe walkway, an upper crane runway with 2 m cantilevered overhangs at each end, and a polygonal arch crown.

The operator advances the 100 kN hoist while the inspector checks reactions from the lower walkway. At the right overhang, the inspector signals a stop and rolls a 25 kN ballast trolley towards the left tip. Moving the loads changes the support reactions and axial forces. The two engineers then recover the load and park the ballast.

ENGINEERING WORK AREA · FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS & SEISMIC ASSESSMENT

FEA & seismic assessment

Static verification, nonlinear analysis and soil–structure interaction

My engineering experience includes finite element modelling, static safety verification, nonlinear pushover analysis and seismic vulnerability assessment. These methods support the bridge, industrial and building work described in the other files.

Analysis and interpretation

At Smart Engineering, my work included static safety checks and nonlinear pushover analyses for bridges and viaducts under NTC 2018 and Eurocode 8. At Bait Alkaram, a reinforced-concrete foundation redesign addressed a soil–structure interaction issue and differential-settlement risk.

From model to engineering checks

The documented software includes SAP2000, Midas Gen/Civil, CSI Bridge, ETABS and SAFE. Analysis models support code-based checks, technical reports and design revisions coordinated with the wider project team.

UNION TECHNIC S.R.L. · CECINA, ITALY · 2024–PRESENT · EUROCODE / BS / AISC / ACI 318 & 350

Oil & gas structural package

Pipe racks, vessel supports and foundations

In oil and gas plants, structural steelwork and foundations must resist concentrated mechanical, thermal, wind, and seismic forces within tightly constrained plant corridors. At Union Technic S.r.l., I design and verify primary and secondary steel support frames, multi-tier pipe racks, pressure-vessel supports, and reinforced-concrete equipment foundations.

Engineering scope & verification

Using SAP2000, I build 3D finite element models with dead, live, product-test, thermal anchor/guide friction, wind, and seismic load combinations to EN 1990–1993, BS 5950/8110, AISC, and ACI 318/350. High-frequency operational loads on pressure vessels and rotating machinery are checked for fatigue and local plate buckling, while baseplates, anchor bolts, and RC pedestals are verified against uplift and overturning.

Multidisciplinary coordination & fabrication delivery

Member sizing and connection details — moment end-plates, gusseted bracings, sliding pipe shoes — are optimized for constructability and lower steel tonnage. All structural models are federated in Revit, Tekla Structures, and Navisworks so that clashes with process, piping, mechanical, HVAC, and firefighting routes are resolved before shop and fabrication drawings are issued.

SMART ENGINEERING S.R.L. · PISA, ITALY · 2023–2024 · NTC 2018 & EUROCODE 8

Bridge assessment & rehabilitation

Composite design, seismic pushover and rehabilitation

Italy's highway network includes post-tensioned concrete and steel–concrete composite viaducts that need rigorous condition assessment, seismic vulnerability checks, and targeted strengthening to NTC 2018 and Eurocode 8.

Numerical modelling & seismic assessment

At Smart Engineering S.r.l., I developed spine and grillage finite element models in Midas Civil, CSI Bridge, and SAP2000 to assess moving traffic loads, prestress losses, temperature gradients, and soil–structure interaction in the substructure. For existing multi-span viaducts, I ran nonlinear static (pushover) analyses and modal response spectrum checks to locate plastic hinges in piers and shear demand at bearings.

Field inspection & retrofit strategy

Analytical findings were combined with on-site inspections — mapping spalling, tendon corrosion, and bearing degradation — to produce regulatory calculation reports, maintenance plans, and rehabilitation drawings: jacketed piers, bearing replacement, and deck strengthening.

BAIT ALKARAM CO. LTD. & ELKHANDAGAWI · KHARTOUM, SUDAN · 2015–2023 · ACI 318 / EUROCODE 2 & 3

Buildings & foundation design

Soil–structure interaction and BIM value engineering

Across commercial and residential developments in Khartoum, I led structural design, site QA/QC, and contractor coordination from foundation excavation to superstructure completion.

Foundation redesign for differential settlement control

At Bait Alkaram Co. Ltd., geotechnical checks on a multi-storey building revealed compressible soil layers that posed a serious differential-settlement risk under isolated footings. I modelled the coupled soil–foundation–superstructure system in ETABS and SAFE and redesigned the substructure as a stiffened reinforced-concrete foundation system. It redistributed column reactions, controlled angular distortion, and kept bending and punching shear within ACI 318 limits.

Shop drawings & value engineering

Earlier, at Elkhandagawi for Contracting & Construction, I combined field QA/QC inspections with Revit and AutoCAD quantity take-offs and bar-bending optimization, contributing to a documented 2% reduction in total construction cost without compromising code safety margins.
